Overview
Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) was a Government of India scheme launched in 2009 with the vision of making India slum-free. The programme aimed to provide property rights to slum dwellers and ensure access to basic services such as housing, water supply, sanitation, and social infrastructure. It encouraged states to prepare city-level slum-free plans and bring informal settlements into the formal urban system. Under RAY, financial assistance was provided for the construction of affordable housing and redevelopment of existing slums. The scheme emphasized community participation, inclusive planning, and sustainable development. It also promoted convergence with other urban development initiatives to improve livelihoods and living conditions. Though later subsumed under other missions like Housing for All, RAY played an important role in highlighting urban poverty issues and strengthening policy focus on affordable housing and slum rehabilitation across Indian cities for inclusive urban growth in future.
